From: Scientific Studies on Benzene Health Effects

Carcinogenicity of Benzene in Experimental Animals

Further Studies on Benzene Carcinogenicity in Rats and Mice, 1988

104 Wistar rats and 78 Swiss mice treated with benzene in olive oil at a dose of 500 and 0 mg/kg once daily, 4-5 days/week showed:

  • In Wistar rats: Zymbal gland carcinomas, oral and nasal cavity carcinomas, and increased total malignancies.
  • In Swiss mice: Zymbal gland carcinomas and dysplasias and an increase in the incidence of female mammary tumors, lung tumors, and total malignant tumors.

Benzene, a Multipotential Carcinogen Summary Of Results, 1989

"The Bologna experiments proved for the first time that benzene is an experimental carcinogen. These experiments demonstrated that benzene is carcinogenic when administered by ingestion and by inhalation and that it causes tumors in the various tested animal models, S-D rats, Wistar rats, Swiss mice, and RF/J mice. They also showed that benzene is a multipotential carcinogen."

Maltoni C, et al. 1989. Environ Health Prospect 82:109-124.
